Roll-on/Roll-off vs Container Shipping: Choosing the Right Method
Both methods move cars across oceans, but they differ in protection, cost, and suitability for high-value vehicles.
When it comes to moving a car across an ocean, two methods dominate: roll-on/roll-off and container shipping. Each has a place, and choosing well protects both your vehicle and your budget.
Roll-on/roll-off, or RoRo, means the car is driven onto a dedicated vessel and secured for the journey. It is efficient and often more affordable, and for many standard vehicles on common routes it is perfectly suitable.
Container shipping places the vehicle inside a sealed container, sometimes with other cargo and sometimes alone. It offers more protection from weather and handling, which is why luxury, sports, and collector cars usually travel this way. Enclosed containers can also accommodate additional bracing for low or rare vehicles.
The decision comes down to the value of the car, the route, and the buyer's appetite for risk. For the vehicles Pollux Motors handles, container shipping is usually the right call, and we structure quotes so the trade-offs are clear rather than buried.
